Georgetown University
Liaison Office Director, Shanghai

The director will lead Georgetown's newly established Liaison Office in
Shanghai, China, which will play an important role in deepening the
university's relations with Chinese institutions and facilitating
opportunities for Georgetown faculty and students in China. The office
will be located on the campus of
Georgetown's partner, Fudan University,
in the Center for American Studies. The director will work closely with
a range of
Georgetown units to coordinate current activities with Fudan
and in
China more generally. S/he will play a key role in developing and
launching new initiatives, as well as in reinforcing
Georgetown's
reputation in
China.

The director will be expected to:

I. Build relationships at Fudan and with other academic partners,
government agencies, and
Georgetown alumni, parents and friends.

- Stay current on developments with these groups through monitoring
media reports, independent research, attending events as Georgetown's
representative, and personal contacts with representatives of these
groups.

- Work with
Georgetown faculty and administrators to identify and
develop new programs at Fudan for
Georgetown scholars, and at Georgetown
for Fudan and other Chinese scholars.

- Identify potential partners on both sides and facilitate
communications through meetings, correspondence and informal contacts.

- Present opportunities by writing project proposals, including
narratives and budgets.

II. Establish new channels for recruiting
Georgetown students, faculty
and researchers.

- Assist in recruiting post-doctoral fellows under China Scholarship
Council partnership:  Plan and execute information sessions for
candidates by identifying locations, working with hosts, promoting
sessions, and make compelling case to perspective applicants. Plan and
execute interview sessions with candidates. Coordinate alumni and other
interviewers. Report to faculty on qualifications. Update assessment
tools.

- In collaboration with various admissions offices, promote
Georgetown
degree and non-credit programs to Chinese audiences; conduct interviews
with applicants.

III. Organize visits of
Georgetown delegations to Fudan and other
locations in
China.

- Advise on visit agendas. Suggest individuals/organizations to meet.

- Provide logistical support, e.g. travel arrangements, event
management, language interpretation.

IV. Administer office operations, including office finances (propose
annual budgets, reconcile monthly expenses), relations with vendors for
services and the recruiting and supervision of assistant(s).

The preference is for candidates with a minimum of 5 years professional
work experience, including time living and working in
China and the
United States, graduate-level studies in a US university, and experience
relevant to the liaison office priorities (new program development,
admissions, student exchange, or public relations). Candidates should
demonstrate effective business writing and public speaking skills, as
well as evidence of being a self-starter with capacity to work
independently and make judgments that further the interests of the
university. Important attributes include flexibility, ability to handle
multiple projects with diverse constituencies and requirements, detail
orientation, sensitivity to and ability to maintain confidentiality,
collegiality, responsiveness, judgment, problem-solving skills, calm in
the face of pressure, diplomacy, dependability. Fluency in English is
required and Mandarin Chinese is strongly preferred. Candidate must be
eligible for necessary visa(s) or other authorizations to travel between
China and the United States. The director will be expected to travel to
Washington at least 2 to 3 times per year, and travel within China
regularly as necessary.
